Default sorting cells with numbers and letters

I am looking for a way to sort in Excel 2007 on numerical values when
there is also a letter in the cell. For example to get:

235 X
587 X
023 K
004 X
228 X

into the sort:

004 X
023 K
228 X
235 X
587 X

However, there is no numerical option b/c there are letters and there
doesn't seem to be a wildcard function...

Thanks!
