Default dates on pivot table not right

Hello On the data sheet I formatted the dates as
custom mmm-yy example of results is Jul-09 BUT when I create a pivot table
using the data the dates show as 7/29/09
How do I correct this so that the dates and the totals show Jul-09
thanks

When you create a pivot table it reads the dates into pivot cache memeory. It
does not read the format of the dates into memory. On the pivot table right
click the dates and select
Field Settings... - Number | Date | Select your format

HTH...

Thanks Jim
The dates need to be and are in in the row section of the pivot table
following your instructions Number does not appear after selecting Field
settings...
I tried formatting the cells as text and that works except that now the
months are in alphabetical order and I need them to be year order by month
starting with Jan

thanks thanks

A couple of quick questions...
1. Your source data cells are true dates and there are no blanks in the list?
2. Which version of XL are you using. The Pivot table engine changed in XP.
When you Select Field Settings what buttons or such do you have as choices...
