Default when I type zero cell is blank

When I type a zero number into a cell and press return key the number
dissapears from view in the cell.

Any help appriciated.

One quick diagnose, click ToolsOptionsView tab
Is "Zero values" unchecked? Check it OK

Does the 0 still show up in the formula bar (at the top)?

If yes, then I'd check here first:
Tools|Options|View tab|
see if zero values is unchecked

If it is, then check that option.

Tools/ Options/ View:
Check: Zero values

If it isn't that, make sure that you haven't got a custom formatting which
hides zeroes.
#,##0;-#,##0 would show zeroes; #,##0;-#,##0; wouldn't.

Default when I type zero cell is blank

Or you might have Conditional Formatting set for that cell, such that
the foreground colour is white when the cell contents are zero. Just
change the background colour to see if the zero appears in white.
