Default how to enter & query dates in XL 2003

what's the best way to enter anniversary dates into an XL address file. I
want to keep years and also sort on month

Excel will not sort on months. You will need to set up a helper column.
Say your dates are in Column B starting in B2. In your helper column, enter
this formula in row 2 and drag it down:
=Month(B2)
Your helper column will now have the month numbers. Sort your data by that
helper column. Then you can delete the helper column or keep it for further
sorting. HTH Otto
