Default How do I get excel to display the number of columns selected?

Excel normally displays the number of cells/columns selected as you slick and
drag across the sheet, selecting multiple rows or columns. This number
usually appears in a little yellow box next to the cursor as "#R' or '#C'.
For some reason, my version of excel has stopped displaying this number,
which is very annoying when performing VLookups, etc.

In XL 2003 and 2007 the "nR x nC" appears in the "Name Box" just left of the
Formula Bar.
Hope this helps.
