Default Problems with Pivot tables in compatibility mode

I have a pivot table which is using an external data source of an access
database. When I create calculated fields in the Pivot table and save in
..xls, when I reopen the file, all of the pivot functionality disappears. Is
there a fix for this.
Thanks in advance...
Dave
