Default Date format in cell

I am trying to put a date in a cell, but the cell keeps formatting the
numbers with a = sign before them turning it into a formula. How can I stop
it from doing this? I've already cleared all formats from the cell.

1/1/09 turns into =1/1/9 with a result of 0.1111111111

Thanks
