I have a password protected workbook that I know isn't corrupted because I
can open it on another computer. I also opened it as recently as yesterday
on my own PC. But today, all of a sudden, it is a corrupted workbook. The
workbook that won't open is in xlsx format. I have backups of this workbook
that also won't open on this PC even they were created months before this
problem arose. I do have a couple-year old version of this workbook in xls
format that DOES open, and it is also password protected. So, it appears my
Excel installation won't open any xlsx file that is password protected,
because it thinks it is corrupted. I thought about uninstalling Excel and
reinstalling but that doesn't appear to be possible without uninstalling all
of Office 2007, which I'd rather not do unless absolutely necessary.
Somehow, my installation of excel seems to have become corrupt--not my data
files. All the non-password protected workbooks open fine. I am using the
correct password to open the file, so I know that is not the problem. I'd
appreciate any ideas to resolve this situation. Do I have to just reinstall
all of Office? Thanks!

Maybe you can run the Detect and repair (whereever it's hidden in xl2007).

But if that doesn't work, I'd bite the bullet and reinstall.

Dave, I appreciate the ideas you suggested. I probably should have mentioned
in the OP that I had already tried those, but it was getting to be pretty
wordy as it was. When I try the repair tool it does nothing but tells me
again that it is corrupted. All the diagnostic tests come out ok.

What is really weird is that many of my microsoft programs are behaving
oddly since a day or two ago when this excel problem arose. Outlook is now
asking for a password whenever I send or receive--Account settings won't
remember it. Money wants me to download an update yet it won't install and
won't tell me why. Upon booting the PC, I now get a never seen before
message that Outlook Express can compress my messages to save space--but I
don't use Outlook Express. Internet Explorer 8 gives me a message upon
opening that another program has corrupted my search engine add-ins. Windows
Live One Care says I have no viruses but what could cause this weird behavior
in all these programs--including Excel--all of a sudden? Coincidence? I had
none of these issues two days ago. Something has made it past OneCare...

I have no idea.

Maybe you can make a note of the exact words used in any (or all?) of the
messages and search google for those phrases.
