Default Use of CLIPBOARD in EXCEL

Why do items put on to the CLIPBOARD in EXCEL disappear the moment ypu type
something in a cell? Is there any way of disabling this very annoying feature?

If you're using Excel 2002, or later version, you can use the Office
Clipboard, which stores more items. To see it, choose EditOffice Clipboard.
