Default Unable to open excel files

I suddenly am unable to open my excel files. I get the microsoft error box
saying it encountered problems and had to close. I then get the option of
filing and error report. I have already updated with the original discs in
the computer and that did not work. What else can I do? Can I remove
microsoft suite or excel and download it again without affecting my files?

Thank you

Hi,

Can you open excel at all? If so it could be the file that your trying to
open that's corrupted.

As N1KO suggested, try opening some other .xls files and see if this is a
file specific problem, or a more general problem with Excel.

Don't rush to a hurried solution - others may chime in here with suggestions
such as deleting temporary files, that may help with the problem.

If it's an Excel problem, before uninstalling/reinstalling the entire suite,
use your source CDs to start an installation. If memory serves me right,
there's an option to "repair" your installation or even to kind of just
perform an installation over the current one using your current
options/settings. If that succeeds, it's a lot easier to go on from there.
If it doesn't cure your problem and you do end up uninstalling Office/Excel
you may have to activate the installation again. If you've already used all
auto activations you'll need to call in to get it activated - just explain
what happened and you shouldn't have any problems getting it activated over
the phone.

Lisa,

If it is just one file then in all likelihood it is currupted.

If it is the program itself, then personally I would uninstall Excel and
then reinstall. Before reinstalling
I would also run Disk Cleaner and Disk Defragmenter just to tidy up the
disk. This may take a bit of
time. Doing this should not affect your working files.

Regards
Paul
