Default Excel Macro Errors - it just doesn't like Word
Hi guys,

I'm not sure if this can even be done so please excuse my ignorance if it
can't.

I currently have a macro that is used to clean phone numbers. This is a Word
macro and is used to remove all non numerical characters.

I receive an Excel spreadsheet that contains a whack of phone numbers in a
number of fields. I want to clean these phone numbers by using a macro to
copy from excel to word, clean with the word macro, and then return back to
the relevant excel column.

The Word macro doesn't like to play ball like this. Works fine if I do it
manually (copy the column, paste it into Word, run the macro, copy it back
and then paste it into a text column) but when I try to test it with the
excel macro, it's a no go.

I receive an error message - Run-time error '1004': Pastespecial method of
Worksheet class failed.

I presume (seeing as word didn't even open) that this aspect just didn't
happen, hence causing the problem.

I can't perform the clean in Excel as it removes all leading zeros, which I
need....

Any help, or a simple 'No chance champ', is appreciated.

Sure it can be done.

First post your macro for comments, second describe what you desire to
happen with the phone numbers.

I'm sure it can be done in excel!

Basically I wish to clean all phone numbers and remove non numerical
characters. As an example, I have numbers stored in my source data as:

021 451 234 - Chappy
(w) 09-9521-7894: Michael

This macro I use cleans the phone number and effectively creates it as:

021451234
0995217894

The prob I have in Excel is that when I run a search & replace it drops my
leading 0, but I find with copying it to word, running the macro, and then
pasting special as text, it works fine. So the above numbers appear:

21451234
995217894

Ideally I'd just like to do the entire thing in Excel as I get a daily data
extract and having a macro do it all in Excel would be triffic.

I presume (seeing as word didn't even open) that this aspect just didn't
happen, hence causing the problem.

I can't perform the clean in Excel as it removes all leading zeros, which
I
need....

Any help, or a simple 'No chance champ', is appreciated.

Default Excel Macro Errors - it just doesn't like Word
Sorry, minor confusion.

This part:

This macro I use cleans the phone number and effectively creates it as:

021451234
0995217894

The prob I have in Excel is that when I run a search & replace it drops my
leading 0, but I find with copying it to word, running the macro, and then
pasting special as text, it works fine. So the above numbers appear:

21451234
995217894

Should read:

Next
ExtractNum = pNum
End Function

With your original strings in A1 and down, enter this formula in B1 and copy
it down the used range:

=ExtractNum(A1)

If you want to skip the formulas, copy column B and goto PasteSpecial
Paste: Values OK

Default Excel Macro Errors - it just doesn't like Word
Hi Per,

Just one other query that you may be able to help with in relation to this.

My data comes in with a variable number of rows each day. Is there a way to
fill the relevant column down until it reaches the last line of data each
time?

In Column A there is always a value, so this will always indicate the number
of rows of data in the file. Column AO contains the phone number formula,
beginning at AO2, that you posted. Is it possible to fill Column AO down to
the last row as indicated by column A?

Thanks for your reply, I'm glad that you could use my UDF.

Here are two (three) ways to fill in the formula. The second macro is the
simplest, but it requieres that you enter the formula in AO2 before the
macro is ran. The first macro fill in the formula, you just have to change
TargetCol to the column holding your phone numbers.

Sub FillInFormula()
Dim StartRow As Long
Dim LastRow As Long
Dim FormulaCol As String
Dim TargetCol As String

StartRow = 2
LastRow = Range("A1").End(xlDown).Row
FormulaCol = "AO"
TargetCol = "AN" 'Change to phone num col
'Columns(FormulaCol).NumberFormat = "@" ' This line is needed if you choose
option # 2 below

For r = StartRow To LastRow
Range(FormulaCol & r).Formula = "=ExtractNum(" & TargetCol & r & ")" '
Option # 1
'Range(FormulaCol & r) = ExtractNum(Range(TargetCol & r))' Option # 2
Next
End Sub
