Default Changing date format in copy paste

I have a software tool that holds the month and year in a column and when I
copy that data into Excel it sees it as the day and month.

Is there any way when pasting in that I can change the date format (when I
do past special I only get Unicode Text or Text as options)?

I would paste into notepad and save that file as .txt.

Then I could open the file in excel and see the text to data wizard and I could
tell excel to treat that field as text.

Later, I could use a formula in another cell that would convert it to a real
date (the first of that month???).

Thanks Dave,

That does exactly what I need it to do - now I just need to try to explain
that to the headteacher of a primary school and hope he understands ;)
