Those are known as grid lines.

Prior to xl2007, it's Tools, Options, View Tab - Windows Options - Uncheck

How do you remove the graph paper from Exel?
Hi,
By default gridlines don't print, so if you want to turn them off for printing purposes, its not necessary.
