Default 'Windows in Taskbar' Excel2003 vs 2007

I am running Excel2003 routinely; I am set up with 'Windows in
Taskbar' unchecked so that as I click on multiple *.xls files (say in
Windows Explorer) only one instance of the application is open and all
spreadsheets are visible in the Window pull down menu. I recently
installed Excel2007 and only want to run this on specific files, so I
changed the file associations so that 2003 opens xls files....
My problem is that now whenever I click on an xls file, a new instance
of Excel is launched; what I want is for a single instance to list all
open spreadsheets. The puzzling part is that the 'Windows in taskbar
box is still unchecked! I also opened my Personal xls and made sure
the box was unchecked there as well. It's almost as if there is a
default set by 2007 somewhere and is not controlled by the Tools/
Options/View dialog. I'm not real comfortable in the Registry,
although I did find a post by Gord Dibben (I think, apologies if I
misquoted) detailing Registering and deregistering versions that I
might try if all else fails.

Try changing the "Ignore Other Applications" setting in the Options
dialog (on the Tools menu).

Windows in Taskbar has no effect on whether Excel opens each workbook in
separate Excel instances. Re-registering Excel 2003 is the best answer to
opening XLS files in one instance of Excel 2003. You said you re-registered
but, if it didn't work, you might have done it to Excel 2007.

First get the full path to Excel 2003 from Windows Explorer. Below is the
usual path:

Then from Start-Run enter: C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Office11\Excel.exe /regserver

There is a space after Excel.exe and before the slash.

It also helps if the two Excel versions are installed in separate folders.

have "Ignore other apps" checked, re-registered (insuring I was
pointing at 2003 exe) and have the 2 versions loaded in different
directories. No joy. I'll keep looking and report back if I ever solve
this.

no effect puzzles me. What does it control in that case?

What does it control in that case?

It controls whether each open window in Excel appears in the Windows
Taskbar, versus just "Excel" appearing there once.

If you start Excel from the Start menu and then do a File Open on three
workbooks, those three workbook will all in open in one instance of Excel.
If you select Windows in Taskbar, then they will appear there while still
being in the one Excel instance. It's just an easy way of navigating among
windows at the price of more Taskbar clutter.

Problem Solved!!

Had to do with the file association, not exactly sure what as I
changed it to launch 2003 when opening any *xls file, but anyway, I re-
associated xls to a Excel Worksheet, and in the Advanced dialog box,
there is a checkbox for "Browse in a single window" (or similar).

Problem Solved!!

Had to do with the file association, not exactly sure what as I
changed it to launch 2003 when opening any *xls file, but anyway, I re-
associated xls to a Excel Worksheet, and in the Advanced dialog box,
there is a checkbox for "Browse in a single window" (or similar).
