Default Sum (or Count) Total for a Column of Text

I have a very simple spreadsheet. In Column A I have employee's names listed.
How do I create a formula or what do I select in order to count and get the
total sum for the number of employees I have in that Column A? In order
words, how can I get the sum of a list of items in a column that only has
text?
