Hi Doug,
If the dates are valid in Excel, they should already be treated as numbers rather than categories in a scatter graph. By valid I mean separated by "/" or "-" like 14/11/08. If they're just month names or years, then they'll be treated as text - in this case you can use something like 01/01/08 in your data, and format the X-axis in your scatter chart to read Jan 08 or whatever.
