Default Excel 2007 - Subtotal disabled if Format as Table applied

FYI:
You cannot (apparently) use the automatic sub-totals (Data ribbon/Subtotals
button) for a 'table', if you have applied "Format as Table" to an area of a
sheet.

Format as Table is a new feature in Excel 2007 that applies a name to a
range of data, but it somewhat different than 'named ranges' in previous
versions of Excel. It's very handy for a lot of reasons, but has some
un-documented consequences.

You can however apply table styles, without actually defining a 'table' as
such.

Too bad, there's no real reason this shouldn't be able to work.
