Default When I use Auto Filter the drop down list is blank

I have a spreadsheet that I have be using for years. Now, when I use Auto
Filter and go to the drop down lists, the lists are blank; meaning a list
existings, just can see the listed items. If I click in the blank field,it
selects as if I can see it but I'm guessing from a blank list. It is almost
like the text in the list is "white" and therfore blank.
I tried turning Auto Filter off and then selecting the range and turning
Auto Filter back on but it doesn't help.

The problem exists on multiple sheets in the workbook but not ALL sheets.
I'm very confused.
