It is the ability to freeze the worksheet above the cell that is referenced
when the "freeze panes" option is clicked. It is good for tasks that involve
scrolling through worksheets while needing to reference data at a portion of
the spreadsheet that is at the top.

Go to Window -- Freeze Panes to try it. Just remember that the sheet
will be frozen above the cell that is referenced when the option is clicked.

What did Excel help tell you when you asked it about "freeze panes"? Which
parts of that didn't you understand?

It will also freeze columns to the left of the cell selected.

So if you choose A2 and then freeze panes, row 1 will always be visible as
you scroll down the sheet.

If you were to choose B2 and then freeze panes, row 1 and column A would
remain visible as you scroll down/across the worksheet.
