I have some string data in CSV formatted spreadsheet.
For example, I fill some cells with lower case strings "true" or
"false"
But after saving the file in CSV format, I see those strings have been
automatically converted to uppercase strings "TRUE" or "FALSE".

I think, there are some configuration in the Excel where this
automatic conversion to uppercase can be avoided. Please let me know.

TRUE/FALSE are logical values (-1 and 0 respectively) and Excel always
converts them to dispaly as TRUE/FALSE. To modify the appearance of
TRUE/FALSE enter them as labels by preceeding the entry with an apostrophe:

'True
'False

The apostrophe forces Excel to treat what follows as text and not as a number.

The case isn't changed when you did the saveAs.

You can look at the .csv file in Notepad and verify this.

But if you open the .csv file in excel, you'll see that excel converts the
string true to the boolean value TRUE (same for False).

You can have more control over the input by using:

Data|get external data
(xl2003 menus)

And you'd be able to specify the type for each field--use text for these.

Or you could rename the .csv file to .txt
then use File|Open to open the .txt file.

Then you would see that same wizard.
