Default Indent text in cell

When printing a spreadsheet with text in the cells, sometimes text gets cut
off - this can be avoided by using "device font" - but that is a manual
procedure and depends on the printer. A better way would be to have all text
indented from the cell borders.

Using the indent feature for the cell format only allows to do it in both
sides if the text is centered and evenly distributed. I would like the text
to be left aligned, and I would also like the indentation to be at the top
and the bottom as well.

Is there a way to do that?

May use thick transparent borders or something...? Any suggestions are
appreciated.
