Default Excel .tmp Files

I see a lot of posts for this particular problem, but I am not sure I see any
answers. I have Excel 2007 on my desktop and my laptop. I have noticed that
everytime I open and close an excel file, the program leaves a .tmp file in
the same directory as the datafile. Some have speculated that this may be
happening when the 2007 office converter is installed. Is there a solution
to this problem. Thanks.

I've never seen a .tmp file in the same folder as the workbook I've opened
using Excel 2007. I always see a hidden file of the same name except with a
~ in front of it. This is normal and it is deleted when the workbook is
closed.

If those .tmp files look like: ...\VB*.tmp

I searched google again for "\vb" and .tmp and got a few hits.

One of them:
http://groups.google.co.uk/group/mic...1eecaad1c774cc
or
http://snipurl.com/1339g

One person posted that they saw files that had names like: ~RF26c83af.TMP.

It was caused by AVG.

You can read her description in this thread:

A while ago, someone posted back that uninstalling something called "Panda
ClientShield" fixed a similar problem.

Even if you're not running "Panda ClientShield", you could try disabling this
program to see if the problem goes away.

ps. I didn't remember correctly. That thread from Wendy (#7) does indeed point
to AVG as the culprit.

No, these are not hidden files, and they are not deleted when the workbook is
closed; here is an example of one of the files; "FC23D53A.tmp".

Hi Dave, None of these areas seem to old the answer to my problem. It is not
a copy and paste problem, I don't own the Panda program or AVG. Here is a
sample of one of the .tmp files FC23D53A.tmp. Thanks

Default Excel .tmp Files

Are you positive that there is an extension (.tmp) on these files?

If the files really don't have any extension, then maybe something else is going
wrong.

Some background...

When excel saves the file, it saves it as a temporary file with a funny name (8
characters--no extension) in the same folder.

If the save is successful, xl will delete the original (or rename it to its
backup name (like "backup of book1.xlk)) and if that's successful, xl will
rename the funny named file to the original's name.

Maybe something is going wrong with that last rename step.

If you really do have that .tmp extension, do you run any AV software at all?
If yes, I'd try disabling it to see if the problem goes away.

Yes, I am positive that these are .tmp files. Here are several examples,
51D5976.tmp, 186FDCF4.tmp, FC23D53A.tmp. Also, as stated below, I do not run
AVG. I can also open each .tmp file with excel, pretty much a full copy of
what I had been working on. Thanks - Mike

My response was asking if you ran any AV (antivirus) software--not AVG.

But I don't have another guess.

Hi. I don't have an answer either, but I'll just throw this out.

In the following article, it mentions a similar problem for Word, but not Excel.

"Issues that are fixed in the update to the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936695/en-us

About half way down...
"Word Converter leaves .tmp files in Temporary Internet Files..."

Although Excel is not mentioned, perhaps make sure you have the latest updates for office.

As a side note, do you have any vba programs running?
The reason I ask is that your file names appear to be HEX file names.
I've run similar programs in the past to back files up. This returns names like this:

3431A28F.tmp
A9C59B9E.tmp
B1ED505B.tmp

Note that GetTempName uses "rad" to begin the name, and some like to change it to something else.

Function HexTempName()
'// Fixed at 8 Characters here
With CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
HexTempName = Mid$(.GetTempName, 4, 3) & Mid$(.GetTempName, 4)
End With
End Function

Sub TestIt()
Dim j
For j = 1 To 3
Debug.Print HexTempName
Next j
End Sub
