Default Autofilter has gone mad!

We have a spreadsheet with Autofilters on. when you select a column to
filter the blue arrow appears on another column which is not the one filtered
on. We have reinstalled Excel but this has not cured the problem, does
anyone have any ideas as to why it seems to have gone insane?

Do you have a header in each column? Autofilter is sensitive to the absence
of headers!

It does have headers, the file was an imported DAT file. There are
Autofilters on some apparently blank columns - which I believe are due to
spaces being present in the DAT file. However if we filter on, say column K
the blue filter arrow appears on column G.

I've had trouble with no headers and pivottables--but never with autofilter.

Just a guess...

Do you use merged cells in this data?

And you've autofit the columnwidths, right?

What version of excel are you using?

I didn't create the spreadsheet, but it may well have had columns autofit.
Not sure about merged cells - I don't think so. Version is Excel 2003.

I think it has to do with the gaps in your data. This has happened to me
several times. I undo the filters, then if the headers are on row 1, I
highlight the whole columns and then turn the auto filter back on. If your
headers are not on row 1, then highlight the data area and turn on the auto
filter.
