Sounds like the cell is formatted as TEXT.

And if you see the formula in each cell, maybe you're looking at formulas:
Tools|Options|view tab|Uncheck formulas ctrl-` control-backquote (near the 1/! on my USA keyboard) is the shortcut key Dominic wrote: -- Dave Peterson |
