Default Excel - File format is not Valid

I worked on this excel file yesterday and all was fine, when I try to reopen
it today I get the pop up "filename - File Formate not Valid". It has the
correct extention and has not been opened with any other program.

Can any one sugest a way to recover this file.

By the way I have had the same problem with 2 MSword files but these I had
backups for, this one I don't.

Thanks
