Default Number formatting

I have formatted a cell to show negative numbers with a preceding minus sign
and black font.

However when the value of the cell is negative the number is still being
displayed in red. Is there a format setting that is overriding the number
format I have specified?

I am using Excel 2003 SP2.

Conditional formatting, if set, does it!
