Default sorting columns sorts header values too

thanks a bunch John!

You can either sort 1 column, or all columns. My suggestion is to never allow
Excel to 'auto choose' what it is sorting. Select the section of data that
you want sorted. NOTE: If you have corresponding data in other columns, you
want to INCLUDE this in your selection, if a column's data is independent of
neighboring columns, then highlight ONLY the chosen column. See more
information under the Help file for Sort a Range.

Will this also allow me to sort just one column out of many?

Go to your menu, Data--Sort. This will also give you the option have
secondary and tertiary sort criteria.

Thanks for the reply John! There are no options when I just use the A to Z
option on the Excel toolbar at the top. is there a way I can just format the
header row so I can do it this way?

Assuming your header row is row 1 (and only 1 row). When you sort, there
should be a check box that says My Range has, it may default to NO HEADER
ROW, just choose HEADER ROW and you should be good to go.

Hi Folks,
I have Excel 2003 updated and I have very simply set up columns of data by
pasting in each column and typing in header names above them at the top of
the worksheet. I select each column and click sort ascending expanded and my
headers are of course rearranged. Is there a way I can sort on the entire
column like this without having the first row moved? Thanks in advance!
Matt
