I created a pivot table in Excel whereby the data is in one worksheet and the
pivot table is in another worksheet. When I view the pivot table I can't get
the field list to open. I tried clicking on the button inside the pivot table
toolbar but nothing happens. What is strange is that usually when you click
inside the pivot table, a blue border appears around the pivot table, but in
mine there is no blue border when I click inside the pivot table.

Can anyone suggest what could be wrong? I tried rebuilding the pivot table
using the usual wizard, but I still get the same proble. I just can't get the
field list to appear. The worksheet containing the data has all the necessary
column headers.

It seems that your file is damaged or something. There is a tool
called Advanced Excel Repair. I have used it to repair many corrupt
Excel xls files successfully. Its homepage is http://www.datanumen.com/aer/
Maybe you can have a try.
