Default mouse pointer unstable

mouse pointer very unstable and "dances" around screen. i have windows vista
and am using an older version of office is there a conflict maybe

Have you verified that the mouse driver is the latest one available?

Is it an optical mouse (uses a red laser to guide it rather than a
ball)? If so, it may be affected by the surface you have the mouse on.
If the mouse pad has patterns or the desktop is light with a
pronounced wood grain, the laser can pick that up and get confused,
jumping across the screen. Try using a solid coloured mouse pad,
preferably black.
