Default how do i import xml files into excel

I have 500 xml files to convert into excel files. however, i think there is
something wrong with the encoding as most of them that i try to import fails
and says unparseable, invalid character. If i open up the xml file in text
pad then its always a foreign character that is causing the problems.

i then used an access macro we already have to replace all foreign
characters with normal ones, tried to reimport it and got the same message
apart from this time it was an earlier line on which the import failed! I
looked at this character and it turned out to be an inverted comma (').

How can i get these files into excel? thanks.
