Hi Dave
I need to take a value from an Excel 03 spreadsheet and copy it into an Excel 07 spreadsheet. I have been able to do this, however I need to be able to update the Excel 07 spreadsheet each week and the figure is linked back to the Excel 03 spreadsheet, so it says I am unable to update the link due to the source. |

FYI, I have an Excel '07 workbook that seems to be able to obtain data from an Excel '03 closed workbook without any problem. Actually, I have several set up like that. So perhaps your problem is elsewhere. The Excel 07 workbooks are *.xlsm and the 03 is, of course an *.xls --ron |

If you're using xl2003 and trying to retrieve a value from a workbook that was
saved in as a normal xl2007 workbook, I think you'll have trouble. Maybe you can save the xl2007 workbook in the xl2003 fileformat. But I don't see why you're having trouble when you're using xl2007 and retrieving a value from a workbook saved as an xl2003 workbook. Maybe you could provide some more details. I have linked the values from Excel 07 to Excel 03 and when I have
tried to save the Excel 07 workbook, it comes up with the following message: Minor Loss of Fidelity: Some formulas in 07 are linked to other workbooks that are closed. When formulas are recalculated in earlier versions of Excel without opening the linked workbooks, characters beyond the 255 character limit cannot be returned. Thanks very much for your help, my Excel knowledge is limited! |

Are you trying to retrieve the values from cells with long text?
If yes, then the only workaround that I know is to open that "sending" workbook. If no, then it's a warning that you know you can ignore. Thanks very much for your help, my Excel knowledge is limited! Since none of my cells in Excel 2003 have more than 255 characters (most are just numeric values), I just ignore that warning. But if you have more than 255 characters, you probably need to keep the 03 workbook open. --ron |
