Default Excel 2003 serious error

Hello I am new to this forum. I did try to search for my problem prior
to posting, but did not find anything. I am having a major issue on
one of the computers in my company. A co-workers excel 2003 opens and
starts opening a whole bunch of files automatically, most of which are
not even .xls format. There is nothing listed in the Startup folder
for excel. I don't know what is causing this to happen. I have run
some spyware on computer as well, but nothing appears. Sometimes the
error "excel experienced a serious error the last time the add-in
FILENAME was opened would you like to disable" appears. Upon opening
excel in safe mode there are no add-ins selected to start. Also trying
to disable autorecover files in safe mode does not work. Does anyone
have any other ideas? I did try un-installing, and re-installing excel
2003, then also tried un-installing, re-installing office 2003. Neither
worked.

By the Startup folder, do you mean any folder listed under Startup in Tools/
Options/ General, or do you mean the XLSTART folder? Have you looked at
both?

If you have had spyware running in your machine, it would be wise to ensure
that it is cleaned off with a reputable anti-spyware program, but I doubt
whether spyware has caused your symptoms.

Excel will open files from either of two folders.

1.........The startup folder designated in ToolsOptionsGeneral "At startup,
open files in"

Delete this entry.

2. Your Office\XLSTART folder.

Drill down to that folder and move out all files except Book.xlt and Sheet.xlt
and Personal.xls, if you have those.

Neither
worked.-

1) There is nothing listed in the "At startup, open files in" location.
The folder is empty
2) There are no files listed in the "Office\XLSTART" folder. The folder
is empty.

I do notice that it is opening a main drive and trying to open every
file type within that drive even .doc documents. But I don't know where
it getting that drive from, it isn't listed anywhere. The error also
appears to only be connected with my co-worker. When I log on to the
computer Excel opens fine. Also where would these auto recover files be
located? Nothing is located in the folder where excel says to save them?
But when I open the excel program with my co-worker logged it is starts
an automatic recover process. And even when opening in safe mode says
that files are saved in autorecover and will be recovered at next
"normal" start-up.

Any other ideas?

Doesn't sound like an Excel issue to me.

More like an issue with the co-worker's network setup.

I would get the IT people involved.

If you are the IT people maybe set up a new account/profile for the worker and
see what transpires.

I'm not qualified to instruct on that front.

Are your excel files corrupt? If so, you can try a popular Excel file
recovery tool called Advanced Excel Repair to repair your Excel file.
It is a powerful tool to repair corrupt or damaged Excel files.

Detailed information about Advanced Excel Repair can be found at
http://www.datanumen.com/aer/

And you can also download a free demo version at http://www.datanumen.com/aer/aer.exe
