Default Excel changed into Word

Every time I opened certin excel files it would say it was created in an old
excel and I may lose stuff. I always said ok and nothing was lost. Today I
said to do a save in some other format (unfortunately I wasn't paying
attention and don't remember what) and now all my excel stuff is coming up in
code in a MicrosoftWord (XLS) file. How can I undo and get everything back.
Please.
Am using MSO 2007

With Excel 2007 you can save your Excel workbook in a prior version format
or in other formats such as XML. However, I see no way to save a workbook as
a Microsoft Word document. By the way, XLS is an Excel workbook format,
prior to Excel 2007 and is not a Word document. (DOC, DOCX).

Thank you for your time.
When I'm in my file folder, the file name is ABC and file type is XLS
When I open the file it opens as MSWord and the screen has a box (File
Conversion - ABC) and asks me to choose Window Default or MS-DOS or Other
Encoding - then there is a smaller box with OEM US; Portugese (DOS) T.61 etc.
to choose from. Under that is what i guess is my spreadsheet all in code.
Any ideas?

When in Windows Explorer it may be wise to make sure that you are displaying
file extensions and then check that your file isn't actually something
called ABC.XLS.DOC
If you have, then *take a copy of it* and change the name to ABC.XLS and see
what happens.

If you're sure you haven't got a .DOC extension, then it sounds as if you've
got a problem with your file associations (file extension to application),
but if that were the problem it would presumably affect any XLS file which
you tried to open, not just ABC.XLS.

Thank you. However before I had a chance to do any of this my computer
crashed last night. When I turned it on this am it told me I had no drive,
and I needed to do a bunch of tests, which told me I had no drive and need to
reboot and asked me what date I wanted to go back to. Seems everything is
fine now, all excel files are good except for the original one that I tried
to update. It is lost. Don't have a clue what happened. But I appreciate
your time.
