Default Excel 2003 can't recognise Excel v.X file

I have a file created in Excel v.X (Mac Office, circa 2002?). I loaded it
into Excel 2003, which can't recognise the creating version. Whenever I save,
an annoying message pops up saying the original was created on a LATER
version, when in fact Excel v.X is an EARLIER version. Is there a fix for
this?
