XP Pro; Office 2003

I'm not sure this is the correct place for this post, but since it's only
happening to my Excel workbooks I thought I'd statr here..


When I open Excel workbooks and then close them without making changes and
without saving (in fact I do not even get the prompt to save), the system
last date modified changes to the current date/time.

The autosave option in the Tools- Options menu is unchecked.

What else might cause this to happen and how can I prevent it? As best I can
tell this is only happening on my Excel workbooks.

This is normal.

When you open a workbook the modified date changes to current.

If you close the workbook with no changes, the modofied date will revert to last
modified date.

Open Windows Explorer and find a workbook and note the modified date,

Now open that workbook and ViewRefresh in Windows Explorer.

Date will change to current.

Close the workbook and ViewRefresh in WE.

Note date changes back to original.

That's what I would expect, but that is not what is happening, hence, my post.

Yes, I open, refresh WE and date goes to current, however, when I close
(without change or save) the date does not revert to last modified but
remains current.

I have no explanation for the date not reverting to previous after workbook is
closed with no save.

The only time I've seen the date not change back was when the file was stored on
a network drive. We were using xl97 (if I recall correctly).

But the problem went away soon after it started. I always assumed that someone
had installed an update to the windows Network operating system that fixed the
problem. But that was just a guess.

I don't have a guess why it happens or how to stop it, but maybe it's not
excel's fault. Does it happen on local drives (C:) for you?

I have this problem in Excel 2007. It appears to happen for me when I open
up a file and then save it to another location. I assume they are related.
Somehow, the "Save" process is being enacted without us asking for it to be
(on the original file in my case or on the just opened file in yours).
Others do not have this problem. I have searched on many boards to solve
this. If you find a solution, pls let me know.
