I have a list of codes, let's call them A,B,C,A,E,F,A,A,I,J. Next to each
code letter is a dollar amount.

How can I sum all of the dollar values next to an A? In other words, the
total dollar amount associated with A?

You can use the SUMIF function. For example,

=SUMIF(A1:A10,"A",B1:B10)
