Default Column chngd fm letters to numbers. What that & how do I go back?

Working on a spreadsheet and at some point my column headings changed from
letters to numbers. This has messed me up in the sense that when I look at my
formulas in different cells I can not tell where they are pulling numbers
from. Why has this happened and how do I change it back to letters?
