header
printed only on the first page ie. ( header on page 1 and no headers on
pages 2 to 9)

Red,

No, but you can put your header directly at the top of the worksheet.

Hi Red,

..... and the rows that you originally had repeated
like $1:$1
might be included again later say at row 52
so rows to repeat at top would be $52:$52 and you
would insert a manual page break before row 52

Yes. It can be done, but requires VBA code.

See Ron de Bruin's site for this.

Red

Does this mean you have abandoned the project or you want some assistance?

Have a look at David McRitchie's site got getting started withe VBA and
macros.

http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/excel/getstarted.htm

Ron's code is flexible in its parameters and he has provided various options
on the site.

Just edit the code to your taste.

I had a look at Ron de Bruin's site. I'm in my late seventies and have left
it a bit late to start using VBA and macros, but I'll give it a gp.
Thanks for your help Gord.
