How do I stop a file from opening in muliple windows?

When I open a normal excel file, it opens the file in mulitiple window and
each file it opens has a different view of the same information.

You have used the New Window feature and saved the file.
Let's say you have ABC.XLS :1 and ABC.XLS:2 opened
Close the :2 file and now do a save
When you next open ABC there will be just one view of it.
best wishes

Just to add to Bernard's response...

Select the window you want to close and hit ctrl-w.

Remember to save the workbook with the layout you like.
