Default Why does the initial zero in "01625" in a number cell disappear?

Using Excel I have formatted a cell for numbers and typed in "01625". When i
click enter the number changes to "1625". Other cells which seem to be
formatted in the same way retain the zero. If i type in 01625 531300 the
initial zero stays in place. Anyone know why.

The ones that keep the zero are seen as text so if you are not going to
calculate with these numbers it is probably better to either precede any
entry with an apostrophe or format the cell as text prior to the entry.
Another option would be to use a custom format like 00000 which will display
as 01625 of course it will also display an entry of 3 as 00003

01625 531300

If you did not type/remove the space in the above,
you'll see that Excel treats it exactly the same way as it did
when you type: 01625
ie it'll be recognized as a number
