Not sure if this is the right area or not...and if it isn't, I do apologize.
I'm looking for a way that I can add a comment to a file in general...not
just a cell. Specifically what I'm looking for is the ability to read a
comment about a file before I click on it. In other words, I have a list of
files saved in a folder on my desktop. As I'm browsing through the folder
itself, I would like comments about the files inside the folder to appear as
I'm holding my mouse over it. Currently, if I hover my pointer over a file
name, I get the author of the file, size of the file, date it was modified,
and so on. Is this permanent, or is it customizable? Thanks for all the help!

Thats a feature of the Operating system and file system. R-click the
file, pick Properties and Summary tab. Edit the Comments and then you
will see.

If you right click an excel file and select properties and then select
summary and type in a description there under comments, then click apply and
close the properties dialogue box. Don't you see those comments when you
hover the mouse over the file if you are in fileopen? I can see the comment
when I do that.
Btw this is not an Excel question really, it's a Windows question

With file open go to FilePropertiesSummary.

Enter whatever you want in the "Comment" section.

Save and hover to see your comment.

I'm running Office 2007, so I opened the file, went to prepare, and then
pulled up properties. I found the comments area, and filled it in. I then
saved the document. It still displays the file information, such as file
type, author, and so on, even after I've added the comments. Am I missing
something?

Thanks for all your help!

I also attempted this, and didn't see any comments when I hovered.

Any thoughts?

Humm, I get every thing that appears in the "Simple" view. Author,
Title, Comments etc. I suspect that the issue is with your operating
system settings. R-click on other files and pick Summary, edit their
entries and see what you get. In Details view, r-click the column
headers and enable comments and see if it appears in the comments column
