Default File in use

Hi,

I have a problem at work.
The company is changing from Excel 2002 to Excel 2003.
In the past, when one user attempted to open a file that another user had
open the usual message stating that "File in use" by User "is locked for
editing" would appear.
That no longer happens. The only indication is the Read Only in the title
bar
Each user has there own workstation computer. All computers are connected to
a Windows 2003 Server.

I've done a lot of Googling on this and found that some people over the
years have had a similar problem, but sadly no answers.
I've thought it may be some conflict with other software. The Desktop
Enabler for Lotus® Domino® Document Manager has been cited by IBM as causing
this type of problem but we dont have that software.
Does anybody know of anything that could cause this.

Its causing a lot of confusion and time wasting.

Thanks

Bob

It wasn't clear from your post if you wanted to have the ability to have one
or more users editing the file simultaneously. If that's the case click
Tools in the menu and select Share Workbook.

The Advanced tab in the Share Workbook dialog box lets you set conflict
resolution settings, history settings and other options.

Thanks Kevin but this has absolutely nothing to do with sharing a workbook
by the method you describe.

An Excel .xls file (that is NOT shared) exists on a network server.
User A opens the file. It opens in Read/Write mode, which is normal
Before User A closes the file User B opens it.
It use to be that a pop-up message would appear stating that the file is in
use by User A and is locked for editing.
You then have a choice of opening in Read Only or Cancel.
This is the normal and desirable action.

The pop-up message is no longer appearing. The only indication that another
user has the file open is a small "Read Only" in the title bar of the
window. (easily missed)
