I want to create a column for the zipcodes in a mailing list and some of them
have zero's as the first number. the formatting won't let me use zeros as
the first number in a collumn. how do i fix this?

Since the column is dedicated to zip codes, XL has a built in format you can
use:

<Format <Cells <Number tab,
and click on "Special".

Gives you 2 choices:
Zip Code & Zip Code+4

Pre-format the column as Text or preface your zipcodes with an apostrophe which
will be visible only in the formula bar.

You can try either
Format|Cells|Number tab|Special
which allow sfor zip codes or zip codes + 4.

OR (this is my preference as it does both)
Format|Cells|Number tab|Custom category
[99999]00000-0000;00000
