Default Inches & Fett

I am trying to create a construction estimating worksheet to do takoffs of
houses,I have to enter ft. & inches to get totals and sqft totals (muliple
entrys) is there a way to do that?

When I do carpentry work in Excel, I format the cells with Custom format #
?/12. Then I type, for example, 3 2/12 or even 4.5 (to get 4 6/12)
Totals and area look after themselves with this method
