Default vlookup with all the same values in one column

I found one reason the vlookups weren't working for me. I did the formula
correct in cell 2. Then I copied that formula and paste---paste special---
formula in cell 2. Then I doubleclicked cell 2 the box on the bottom right.
That does copy the formula to all the cells in the column I'm tryint to
lookup. I noticed a weird thing. All the values in the column are the same
as cell 1. Then when I click on each cell individually it updates it to the
right match in the vlookup. This took me a long time to figure out becuase I
thought Excel automatically updated cells.

Am I not doing the copy/paste special/formula right. I want to put the
vlookup formula in all the cells in the column.

Tools - Options - Calculation - Automatic ... May be set to "Manual"
