How do I turn on the feature that will allow me to highlight a row of cells
with my mouse and as I highlight each, I can view the total displayed in the
lower right hand corner of my monitor screen?

Go down to your status bar, and you will see a row of pale grey boxes. Right
click on the one 3 to the left of the num box. Select Sum. As you highlight
your cells, the results should appear

In xl2003 and befo
tools|Options|view tab|check status bar

Then rightclick on those "embossed" squares and choose sum (or whatever function
you like).
