Default never before formula

While referensing a cell in another worksheet in the same file with a
formula, some cells won't do it. Instead they just show the formula as typed
like "=Appl!C2". Why?

The cell is probably formatted as TEXT.

Select the cell in question
Format as GENERAL
With the cell still selected press function key F2 then hit ENTER
