If you mean, for example, widening cell X99 while leaving all other cells in
column X unchanged, there's no way to do it. You could merge cell X99 with
Y99 and possibly other adjacent cells to the right, but merged cells cause
all sorts of headaches.

Mike,

No, you have to resize either a row or column. If you select a range of
cells, you can right click, select format cells, alignment, merge cells and
your range of cells will become one.

You can't widen an individual cell, only a column. You can merge cells (not
advised) or format=cells=alignment=Center Across Selection which centres
text across two or more cells.

You could also use one of my favorites, the camera tool, to snap a
picture of a cell somewhere else and then display anywhere you want,
at any size. It stays live, and updates when the referenced cell
changes.
