Default disable formula toolbar dropdown

I want to disable the text dropdown functionality of the formula toolbar. It
is really annoying when you select a cell with more than a 100 characters and
the formula bar drops down to display the entire contents of that cell,
essentially blocking the the first few rows from view, and this also prevents
you from manipulating column sizes.

I only want the formula bar to show me as much of the cells content as it
can in that one line. Does any one know how to change this setting.

Thank You
