I'm trying to create a spreadsheet that will automatically update the number
of merits a student has so that I acn monitor it sucessfuly by a variety of
different methods. This is for the whole school so I do need to get a system
that is easy to update and also easy to enter data. Can You help? I am
using Execel 2002 and am quite a novice so any advice will help!

you need to provide some more details:
- what data are you entering (with example data if possible)
- what do you want to calculate exactly
- etc.

You are not providing much to go on. What you posted is more of an
idea.
What do you envision or want as a means of inputting this data (merits)?
One way is to have a Data Validation cell on one sheet that displays a list
of the students (by name or number or whatever). You would choose a student
from this list, then enter data for that student in some accompanying cells.
Excel would then take this data and update the student database on another
sheet or sheets.
What do you envision for the layout of the student database?
There are a number of ways of doing what you want but you have to
provide a starting point. What do you have so far? HTH Otto
